What is yoga?

Yoga is defined as a complementary, alternative medical practice, also known as CAM. It is a type of lifestyle and practice of physical strengthening and stretching based on Ancient Indian traditions. Yoga consists of strengthening, posture balance, flexibility, breathing practices,and meditation.

What does science say?

 In a recent sleep study by the University of Washington's Department of Biobehavioral Nursing and Health observed 13 older women with sleep disturbances particiapating in a 75 min Yoga program for 8 weeks, to see the effects of Yoga on sleeping habits. 

  • Studies saw that women with sleep disturbances had "significant improvments in several self report sleep outcomes". (Taibi, D.M.,Vitiello, M.V.,University of Washington, Seatte.(2010)

  • Other self reported data from participants was; reduced joint pain, relaxation, and lastly improved sleep. 

  • Participants of the study also reported that they enjoyed the Yoga program and still continue to participate. 

What does this mean for you?

  • Yoga is a great way to not only get physically fit and improve your overall health but to also benefit the way we sleep!

  • Overall this means that participating in a consistant Yoga program can bring signs of improvement in your sleeping habits.
